Papanui cheque to help Canterbury team

The Papanui club has once again come to the assistance of the Canterbury Softball Association.

At last evening’s fortnightly meeting of the association’s management committee, the president (Mr J. A. Gibson) announced that Papanui had donated a cheque for $llO towards the cost of sending the Canterbury representative men’s team to the Rothmans Beatty Cup national championships in Auckland.

“This is the attitude encountered by some North Island associations, where it is considered an honour to represent one’s province,” Mr Gibson said. “I cannot recall the association receiving such a substantial gift,” he said, adding that few clubs were in the position to do so.

The Papanui club came to the assistance of the association last season when it offered the newly developed Papanui Domain for club matches when English Park, the association’s traditional home ground, was unavailable. The meeting decided to inform the Deep Freeze club that it would not be possible to hold its

’projected men’s tournament next Saturday. Although no official approach had been made, members had heard “through the grapevine” that the American servicemen’s team from the Harold E. Holt communications station, North* West Cape of Australia, would be returning to Christchurch. The team played a number of matches in Christchurch at this time two seasons ago.

Triangular tournament. A letter from the Marlborough association stated that Marl* borough favoured a triangular tournament between Nelson, Canterbury, and itself in late January or February. No reply from Nelson has been received.

English Park blocked ball.— The meeting decided to change the rule regarding hits on to the cycle track during club matches. All hits which reach the track will now be an automatic home run

Under 14 Incentives.—After a suggestion by the schoolchildren’s committee representative (Mr K. Palermo), it was decided to attempt to organise a South Island or triangular tournament for the under 14 grade. Mr Palermo said there was little incentive for young players to improve their game at present. Complimentary passes. A letter was received from Mairehau High School, thanking the association for the complimentary passes to English Park. The association recently distributed passes to all primary and secondary schools in greater Christchurch, to attend matches free of charge at the park. The following representative teams were announced: —
