TIMARU, Nov. 29.
A man is in a serious condition and two others also received severe injuries when two cars were involved in a head-on collision at Willowbridge, south of Waimate, on State Highway No. 1, at 7.25 a.m. today. The injured, who were taken to the Timaru Hospital by a St John ambulance are Anthony Calder, of 155 Edinburgh Crescent, Invercargill, who suffered serious head injuries, multiple fractures, and whose condition late yesterday was serious, Ronald Coulston, of 35 Glenavon Crescent, Invercargill, who suffered concussion, a fractured arm, and whose condition was fair, but improving, and Howard Colin Buxton, aged 29, of 160 Broughton Street, Gore, who suffered head injuries and a broken arm, and whose condition was fairly satisfactory. ” Mr Buxton was travelling south and the car driven by Mr Coulston, in which Mr Calder was the only passenger, was going north. Sergeant N. Birse, of the police in Waimate, said both cars were damaged beyond repair. Both slewed round and stopped facing west. The impact was so severe that in one vehicle the engine was pushed back and the drive shaft was driven back through the differential housing.
