WIND SPEED IN KNOTS
The Meteorological Service will issue wind speeds in knots instead of miles an hour from tomorrow. The Assistant Director of Forecasting (Mr I. S. Kerr) said the change to metric units was the main reason for the move. The change to metric units involved the end of using miles an hour, and the knot, because of its use in air and marine navigation, would continue to be an acceptable unit. An increasing number of marine forecasts were being issued through the Post Office, the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation and private radio stations. In these forecasts wind speeds were quoted in knots, he added. One knot is about one mile and one seventh an hour.
