Censorship in China?
Sir, —Could Mr Rewi Alley advise if there is any censorship of mail in China? On his recent arrival in New Zealand he is reported to have mentioned that he kept in touch with affairs here by medium of the “People’s Voice.” A correspondent to your columns immediately wrote stating that he (or she) had often forwarded copies of New Zealand dailies to Mr Alley. Would he kindly advise if these papers were received by him?—Yours, etc., WONDERING.
November 25, 1971. [Mr P. J. Alley replies: “Rewi Alley has passed ‘Wondering’s’ letter on to me to answer. He thanks the correspondent for hjs interest, and he wishes to state that among the newspapers he receives in Peking are the following: The Press,’ ‘Christchurch Star,’ ‘N.Z. Journal of Agriculture,’ ‘N.Z. Listener 1 ; also ‘Newsweek, 1 ‘Time, 1 ‘Life, 1 Manchester ‘Guardian, 1 ‘Economist, 1 ‘New Statesman, 1 and so on.”]
