World XI batsmen punish howling
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—-Copyright)
BRISBANE. I The Rest of the World XI made a spirited reply to Australia’s first innings total of 389 for four declared with a magnificent display of power batting by the South African, H. Ackerman, and the West Indian, R. B. Kanhai, on the third day of the first “test” yesterday.
At stumps, the World XI was 162 for one, with Ackerman 73 and Kanhai 67, and an unbeaten second-wicket partnership of 114 in 122 minutes.
The World batsmen had averaged five runs an over in its chase after runs. Australia, with two cen-tury-makers, I. M. Chappell (145) and K. Stackpole (132), together with K. D. Walters’s 75 not out, had also batted spectacularly, averaging 4.5 runs an over.
The weakness of the bowling of both sides showed up when only two wickets fell for 329 runs yesterday. Ackerman and Kanhai were missed early in their • innings, both off the Western 1 Australian fast bowler, D. I Lillee. Ackerman was drop- ■ ped at leg slip when five and • Kanhai at backward point I when 18. i G. D. McKenzie’s test ■ come-back was not impressive. He was freely hit by
all batsmen in his 13 overs, which cost 66 runs.
Rain has played havoc with the match. It stopped play shortly after tea on Friday and cancelled all plav on Saturday. Australia had resumed yesterday at 222 for three, when Chappell and Walters put on 120 runs for the fourth wicket before Chappell was caught behind the wicket off G. S. Sobers.
