Woman nominee for award

WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. The Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality has added another name to its list of nominations for the association's “International Sportsman of the Year Award” to be presented in Auckland next Tuesday night.

The secretary of C.A.R.E. (Mr T. Newnham) said in a statement today that the addition is Miss Sue Vaughan, a Canterbury representative fast bowler and a member of the women’s cricket national coaching squad, who withdrew from the squad earlier this year after being told the New Zealand team would be expected to tour South Africa as well as Australia. “Her action, like that of Rugby players, Ken Gray and Bob Burgess last year, and the softballer, John Lowes, this year, highlights the cruel dilemma which is forced on New Zealand sportsmen by their officials who commit our teams to support apartheid sport,” Mr Newnham said.
