Changes to team

Several changes have been made by the Canterbury athletic selectors (Messrs D. W. Mackenzie, V. Briedis and W. Jowett) to the team to compete against Otago and Southland in Dunedin on December 11.

J. Gallagher (University-Shir-ley) has been added to the senior men’s team as an 800 metres runner, subject to his being able to make satisfactory travel arrangements. Canterbury was not previously represented in this event.

Three additions have been made to the junior track section. D. Garland (Lovelock), who won the under 17 100 metres in 11.6 sec on Saturday, will run in the 100 metres; P. Williams (Old Boys) will run in the 400 metres, and H. Cooke (Christ’s College) will run in the 400 metres hurdles. M. Sutherland (UniversityShirley), who was originally chosen as a 100 metres runner, has withdrawn.

Two athletes have been asked to double up in the junior grade and run in the 1500 metres. They are W. Sheddan (Olympic) and B. Crocker (Christchurch). Sheddan will also run in the 800 metres and Crocker in the 3000 metres steeplechase.

The junior field events have been strengthened by the inclusion of C. Callow (South Canterbury) in the triple jump and M. Ward (Christ’s College) in the pole vault. In the women’s Section, Miss L. Trimble (Toe H) replaces Miss F. Teahen (Temuka), the reigning Canterbury'champion, in the 100 metres. Miss Teahen has been transferred to the 200 metres, in which Canterbury was not previously represented. She will be joined in this event by the promising 14-year-old, Miss J. Beckett (St Margaret’s College). Miss J. Dippie (Temuka) has been added to the team as a javelin thrower. She will also be a reserve for the high jump.
