“Money Games” auction draws good crowd

A crowd of well over 2500 packed into the Rangiora Show Grounds on Saturday for the Rangiora Businessmens Association’s “Money Games” auction to promote Rangiora and raise money for the Commonwealth Games.

A variety of items was offered for sale, ranging from a pair of hotpants to a 24ft

swimming pool valued at $1415, which was sold for $B5O.

Bids were made for items with special “auction money” which had been given by Rangiora businessmen with purchases before the auction. For each “auction dollar” bid, the successful bidder was required to pay 10c. Other items sold at the auction icluded a pair of ski gloves, valued at $l2, which sold for $3; some liquor, some of which sold for less than the retail price and some of which sold for more; and women’s frocks.

Although the organisers Were not able to confirm yesterday the amount raised, the auction is thought to have been one of the biggest and best projects, promoted by the association.
