Submarine hunting
<N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 26. Reductions in defence spending may . prevent the Royal New Zealand Air Force from taking part in an international submarine hunting contest next month against Australia, Britain, and Canada. An Orion from No. 5 Squadron had been invited to take part in the contest, for the Fincastle Trophy, off Vancouver Island between December 3 and 5. Although crews from the squadron are keen to take part, the R.N.Z.A.F. has yet to make a decision in the light of economy measure* within the three services.
The contest takes the form of a battle. By night, the aircraft must find a submarine at periscope depth, identify it with searchlights, carry out a simulated attack, and take photographs. By day, the aircraft pursues the fully submerged submarine, which may take any evasive action it pleases. An R.N.Z.A.F. Sunderland won the trophy in 1965.
