Top coach returns
One of New Zealand’s most successful athletics coaches in the early 19505, Mr J. C. Bellwood, of Auckland, has returned to the sport. Among his pupils is the former Waikato quarter-miler, Miss L. Tong. Mr Bellwood retired from coaching because of his intense dislike for the trend towards the use of anabolic steroids by both New Zealand and overseas athletes. Before this, he won world-wide fame for his part in guiding Miss Y. Williams (now Mrs Corlett) to gold medals in the long jump at the 1950 Commonwealth Games and the 1952 Olympic Games. At the height of his coaching career, there was never any doubt about which athletes were under his control. His proteges wore a very large “J” (for Jim) on their track suits.
