Turbino upsets

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. About $28,000 in bets was lost on Master John and Sheralee when they finished only third and fourth behind Turbino in an incident-packed race for the Avondale Guineas on Saturday.

It was the second time Turblno had toppled much more highly-regarded three-year-olds. This time he did it in front all the way.

After a very quick start from the outside of the 15 runners Turbina rushed through the first half in 48sec and he was only a fraction Slower over the second. With such a display of pace he would have won, most probably, tn any circumstances. The pity was that he all but settled the chances of Sheralee, Master John and Adelphi by crowding them badly at the end of the first furlong. The interference happened as the field approached the running rail after racing across the gap from where the chute of the mile start joins the course proper. Turbino came across sharply, pushing the other three off their line so that they all but ran into he rail.

A little furthmer on Sheralee was again hampered. From either this, or the earlier scrimmage, she suffered cuts and she was pretty sore when she came back to scale.

The rider of Turbino, R. W. Taylor was, for his part, charged with careless riding and afterwards suspended up to and including December 10.

After the trouble at the seven furlongs Master John got up on the inside of Turbino and the two ran almost together round the home turn into the sraight. Adelphi was close behind, on the outside of Sheralee.

Turbino had an edge on Master John and it was clear, with a furlong to go that Sheralee, whether able or not, would not be a threat, she had so little room. Adelphi, however, continued on most determinedly and all but collared Turbino.

Master John (third), Sheralee (fourth), and Triple Shot (fifth) packed the finish, all within a length of the winner.

Of the $63,110 bet on the Guineas, nearly $35,000 was carried by Master John and Sheralee. Of this amount Master John saved $7571 with his third placing. Turbino carried only $1765 which made him the eleventh favourite each way.
