Storm blows tents away
A week-end search and rescue exercise at Mount Somers was cut short yesterday after an early-morning storm.
The organiser (Inspector W. J. Perring) said that a successful search was held on Saturday, and the 80 volunteers taking part had camped in eight Army tents on a fairly sheltered site. About 1 a.m. a nor’wester gusting to an estimated 100 miles an hour lifted six of the tents out of the ground. One of the occupants was knocked unconscious by a flying tent pole (but made a quick recovery) and the tents were damaged.
Soon afterwards there was a downpour of rain, followed by falls of snow. At dawn, said Inspector Perring, the party “withdrew in good order.” An electrical storm over Christchurch yesterday afternoon brought hail to Lyttelton and several parts of the city, including Dallington, Bryndwr, New Brighton, Huntsbury, Papanui and Burwood.
