Golden Guest has stylish win

Golden Guest brought her record to three wins and a second from five starts this season with a stylish performance against older rivals in the Game Pride Handicap at Motukarara on Saturday.

Mr W. F. Woolley’s Garrison 1 Hanover filly had only two behind her running into the last half-mile, was not much closer to the front on the home turn, but swamped her rivals for finishing speed when brought wide to make her run in the straight. Golden Guest won, going away, by three parts of a length from Rainbow Hall, which was in touch with the pace all the way, and in the leading line begining the last furlong. Gay Hanover, which shared the third line most of the way, was a length back third. He outfinished Brockworth King, another which had his chance, by half a length. Allenton ran on from mid-field for a handy fifth ahead of Bachelor Boy, which was responsible for much of the pace. Excellence led for the last three furlongs for an easy win in the Super Dream Handicap. For the

.first mile, the favourite and his Templeton owner-driver, E. Cowie, were far back in the field but a fast run through the back straight carried them up to the pacemaking Lightsey at the half-mile and clear on the home turn. Excellence, under a hard drive from the furlong, won by two lengths from Mister Lincoln, which made the early pace, then trailed until the home turn. Russley John ran on from the fourth line to take third, half a length back, then there was a length and a half to In Disguise, also running on, at the head of the others.

Gypsy Globe and Caswell won the respective events for the slower-class trotters. The former caused a major upset when she pegged back the favourite, Oakleigh Girl, in the last few strides of the False Idea Handicap.

Gypsy Globe, the fourteenth favourite of 17, returned her supporters $56.25 and $12.50 for a win and place. She was also the first of two winners prepared by the Belfast trainer, C. S. Donald, and the first of two winning drives—the other was Sherwood Em—for his son-in-law. R. P. Nyhan. Gypsy Globe, which tracked Oakleigh Girl throughout the race, outfinished the favourite by half a length. Belle Song, which followed the first two all the way, battled on for third but was five lengths back. Caswell, in the hands of M. Holmes, justified solid backing in the Jersey Hanover Handicap. He took the lead six furlongs out and was not headed after.

The Rolleston stablemates, Mystical and Patrick Sean, filled the minor places. The former ran on well from the fourth line to get within two lengths and a half, of Caswell. Patrick Sean, after being ahead of his stablemate—on the home turn, battled on for third, five lengths away. Great Elect, which made up three parts of his 48 yards handicap fairly quickly, fought on well for fourth. He was a length and a half from Patrick Sean and three lengths in advance of Belle Winter, which had her chance. EASY WIN Irton Prince, the runner-up to Dryham Lea at Ashburton the previous week, made sure he was not run down again in the Pacific Hanover Handicap. N. S. Benny took the Fallacy gelding to the front five furlongs out, allowed him to put three lengths on the others approaching the straight, and then kept him going to win by four lengths.. The consistent Tiawana, which led the chase after the winner on the home torn, was second bv two lengths from Fantastic, which came home well from mid-field. Stereo Light back early but a lot closer at the straight entrance was a neck away fourth, just ahead of Light Command, which made his run from well back in the field.
