Dryham Lea again too good for rivals

Dryham Lea had to be good to gain his third successive win for the season in the Waihola Pace, a race which gave him his first experience behind the mobile barrier.

Dryham Lea drew with and was outside three horses for the first quarter. R. D. Butt settled him In fifth position, but after the half-mile he sent him after the speedy pacemaker, Royal Delmer. He waited on her until the final furlong and then asserted his superiority, coming on to win decisively by four lengths in the good time of 2min 53 2-ssec for the 11 fur-

longs. Van Glory, a candidate for the New Zealand Derby Stakes next month, made an auspicious first appearance for the season by beating Royal Belmer for second by almost three lengths, with an even longer gap to Lee Frost at the head of the others. Lee Frost made up ground and looks a likely improver, as does Debra Charles, the next to finish.

Aronmot made a belated return to winning form when he held off the favourite, Deodatus, by a head in the Mosgiel Handl-

cap. It was his first win for the Waikouaiti-owned veteran since May, 1968. DETERMINED FINISH Deodatus led early, but was pushed well back as the lead changed later. She came on in a most determined manner and just failed to get up. Arita added interest to the finish by getting up for third a neck away, clear of Paroa and Fri, which was checked early. Dee Pee and San Sebastian looked to have the finish of the Taieri Pace to themselves until Kimbell Duke came very fast from mid-field to catch them near the end. Kimbell Duke won easily by a neck from San Sebastian, with Dee Pee holding on for third just ahead of Lawrence. Hobart Lord showed that he will be a top winner when he gave away starts of up to 24 yards and a sound beating to the three-year-olds in the Brighton Handicap. He was a fair way from the leader, Pompano, tn the middle stages, but came on much too strongly for his rivals over the final quarter, and won with a lot in hand. Newport Tryax, after having every chance, held on for second, with Lansing lasting for third a nose in front of Hilton Highway, which was left in the open for much of the race. Then came Star Land and Logan Cheval, neither of which looked really dangerous in the/ run home.

Good Admiral, a costly failure in two starts since he won at the Kurow meeting in August, made no race of the Fairfield Handicap. He was in front from the start and did not appear to be at more than half-pace at any stage to win by a length and a half from Baffle Girl, which moved up to vy for the lead over the last seven furlongs. There was merit in her placing as she broke and lost a few lengths at the start. The veteran, Halberg, trotted a useful race from 48 yards and finished third, half a length from Baffle girl, with a similar distance back to Pressano, with Iceberg, Flying Globe, Bip Spender, and Snoopy right up next. Master Proof, a lightly-raced four-year-old by Hundred Proof from the grand mare, Tactics, proved a class above the field in the Concord Pace. The win favourite, Tom Hanover, pulled hard in the lead, with Master Proof close up. R. M. Cameron ran no risk of getting boxed in with him and moved him out whenever another runner came alongside him. Master Proof took control near the three furlongs and drew away to win by almost five Lengths. Charliewells, close up over the last mile, held on for second, half a head in front of Musterer, with Young Darran making up ground after a slow start. Young Native, too, showed ability and finished fifth.
