(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TAIPEI, October 10. The Taiwan Central News Agency reports that 2500 “freedom swimmers” from China sought refuge in Hong Kong last month. Most swam across the deep bay from the Southern Chinese province of Kwangtung, to Hong Kong, the agency says.
In Hong Kong, reliable sources have reported a sharp increase in the number of Chinese “freedom swimmers” (seeking refuge in the colony, i They say that in 1970, (about 1200 youths and teen--age girls swam across Deep Bay, and that the figure for this year to the end of August was 1800.
Many of the swimmers, the sources say, are former Red Guards unhappy with life in the countryside after being “sent down” from the cities in the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution.
