‘s6m being lost by railways’ (N.Z. Press Assn. —Coppright) SYDNEY, Oct. 10. The transport of the Australian wool clip from fann to auction is costing the industry an unnecessary $6.5m a year, the chairman of the Australian Wool Board (Sir William Gunn) said in Sydney. He was commenting on a comprehensive report prepared by the board’s development division on the most efficient method of marketing the clip.
The unnecessary costs arose through Government regulations preventing free competition between the state-owned railway systems and private road haulers. Sir William Gunn said that if there was free competition between the two, wool producers could expect to average a 42 per cent reduction in the cost of transporting their wool from farm to store or a national saving of $6.5m.
