Yachting trophy to Wearn
J. Wearn won the Christchurch Yacht Club's Burgess Trophy when he gained an eighth and a first placing in his Finn, Jolllfinn, In the two heats which were sailed at the week-end. North-easterly winds made conditions near perfect for the 15 starters in the first heat of the open handicap event on Sat. urday. Yesterday however, condtlons changed swiftly from flat calm, to nor-westerly gusts of up to 30 knots, to southerly raid, and only two of the nine starters completed the course. P. Townsend, in his as yet unnamed Starling-class boat, won the first heat and gained starting points in yesterday’s race to finish in the runner-up position. Although he slipped to ninth place in the second heat after winning the first, P. Hoskin, in Bernadine, won the Penn Trophy P-class handicap event. The runner-up in thia event was R. Robinson, in Tara.
Mis, M. Stemmer. the Penn Trophy" title-holder, gained the seond-fastest time in Metro on Saturday, and took the fastest time yesterday. With one more heat to race, T. Simmance, in Wisp, is leading the Mount Pleasant club’s sailing committee trophy P-class A division event. He wpn the first heat on Saturday from Beveriey Jean (C. Sykes).
