TROTTING Royal Trump wins rough race

(From Our Own Reporter) t WELLINGTON. ’ Royal Trump advanced to a 2:11 assessment with a runaway win in the President’s Handicap at Hutt Park Raceway 7 last evening.

The race was marred by a crash at the end of two furlongs, two of the worst sufferers being the favourites. Globe Bay and Radiant Globe, which were knocked right out of the race. The failures of Globe Bay and Radiant Globe were a severe blow to doubles betters. Between them they carried $80,005 in a pool of $162,039.50. Royal Trump credited his trainer, C. S. Donald, with his first win for the season and now he requires only 12 successes to become the first person to train 1000 winners in New Zealand. Royal Trump’s win was not a complete surprise as he had not finished further back than sixth in his three previous starts this season. He paced the 10 furlongs in 2min 36sec, equalling the track winning record shared by Gildirect and Chequer Board. Royal Trump received a perfect run behind Sam Tryax over the last mile, escaping the skirmish caused

[by Garcon Roux breaking] rand going back on to Radiant; jGlobe, Globe Bay and Sydney "(James. ! After the incident there rl were only five runners with any real chance, Sam Tryax [leading past the half-mile from Royal Trump, Torrent, Valencia and Snowline, with / gaps to Western Ridge and i Radiant Globe. s Snowline was the first to / move, improving slightly f from the three furlongs, but after reaching third on the s turn she began to tire. ' Royal Trump had the field 1 mastered just inside the fur- ! long and he won untested by 1 three lengths and a half > from Sam Tryax, which lasted long enough to beat > Torrent. Snowline and > Valencia followed at interr vals. INQUIRY . An inquiry was held into the crash and it was found that it ‘ was caused by Garcon Roux I breaking for no reason. The - connections of the horse were warned that a repetition of the offence would result in action I being taken. I Heatherloch and Scottish Warrier, both raced by Mr R. : A. McKenzie, a vice-president of l the Wellington club, filled the

first two platings in the City Handicap. Heatherloch was a dominating favourite for the race after her second to Royal Ascot at Adding- ■ ton last Saturday. She was patiently driven bj r D. Mangos, who sprinted her up to be just| behind the pacemakers, Refluent . and Shining Armour, racing to I the straight. Heatherloch was quickly m control and drew away to w 7 in by almost three lengths from Scottish Warrior, which fought on well after being last at the five furlongs. The others were headed by Shining Armour and Refluent, which disputed the pace over the final seven furlongs.
