APPROVAL GIVEN

Inter-club title The club premiership athletics competition for this summer received final approval last evening, but only after the annual meeting of track and field delegates raised various objections and suggestions. Miss B. M. Poulsen, the New Zealand representative, representing the Technical club, opposed the holding of the competition. “This is trying to make a team event out of an individual sport,” said Miss Poulsen. Athletes will put their club first to the detriment of individuals, and this is not right in a Games year.” ‘/This is not a picnic event,” said Mr V. Briedis (also Technical), who was opposed to athletes being required to contest “foreign events.” “I do not think this is the way to i promote athletics in this centre.” I But Mr H, Nelson and others did not agree, and felt the competition catered for a lower class of athlete, “not necessarily the champions.” It was considered that 25 counting events were too many for the premiership, and these were reduced to 20.
