PORT MORESBY, September 6. The 168-ton coastal trader Hokianga was abandoned in the Gulf of Papua after it sprang a leak today. Eight men aboard were taken off by the British tanker Luminous.
The Hokianga, owned and captained by a New Zealander, J. C. McCormick, sprang a leak early today half way between Port Moresby and Dara.
As seas became heavier it developed a list • and water flooded the engine room.
- The Luminous, one of three vessels racing to reach the Hokianga, was first there and took eight men off by liferaft.
Papua-New Guinea’s Superintendent of Marine, Captain R. Stringer, said that the Hokianga was still afloat but expected to sink. The wooden-hulled Hpkianga is owned by Storm Pty, Ltd, of Port Moresby. It was sold to Storm Pty in 1968 by the New Zealand company of A. G- Frankham, Ltd.
.Before its sale it was a motorless barge at Gisborne. The Hokianga was built in
1929 as a twin-screw motor ship. Its engines were removed before it was chartered for work at Gisborne. A new engine was fitted before the ship sailed for Port Moresby.
