Birth dates by ballot

WELLINGTON, Sept. 7.

National military service is ahead for about half the 1787 young New Zealand men whose birth dates were drawn in the Army ballot today. The president of the Returned Services Association (Sir Hamilton Mitchell) drew 32 birth dates of 19-year-old youths born between July 1, 1951, and June 30, 1952. The 32 dates were all required to ballot the minimum of 1750 youths required for this year’s intake. The ballot was held in the presence of representatives of the Army and Labour Department.

DATES DRAWN The dates drawn were:—

1951 July 17, 18, 27. August 13, 26, 31. September 5, 24. October 23, 26. November 1, 3. 9, 24, 26, 27. December 25, 31.

1952 January 4. 11, 26. February 9. March 8, 18, 29. April 4,6, 10. May 6, 8. June 14, 25.

National Service About 350 young men will enter Bumham Military Camp tomorrow to begin 12 weeks of basic military training. Of this number 110 are from the Christchurch area and 170 from the Nonh Island. It is the second intake of national servicemen to enter camp since the training period was reduced from 14 to 12 weeks. A further 400 men will tomorrow begin their training at Waiouru.
