‘Grass’ too tempting
(N.Z,P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)
OTTAWA, September 7. The Canadian Government’s experimental marijuana farm near Ottawa is proving too much of a temptation to young thieves, and officials have launched a nationwide plea for everyone to “keep off the grass” in the name of research. After three raids in two weeks, the Federal Food and Drug Directorate made a televised appeal to thieves to leave the plants alone before they did irreparable damage to research programmes. The Government is growing over 300 varieties of the female hemp plant cannabis sativa whose flowering tops, seeds and leaves are smoked as marijuana. Their intention is to find a strain with a high content of T.H.C. —marijuana’s active ingredient.
The farm covers three cultivated acres which could, in the right conditions, yield 18,0001 b of marijuana.
