SYDNEY, Sept 7.
The director-general of the Swiss-based International Labour Organisation, Mr Wilfrid Jenks, said in Sydney today that trade unions should involve themselves in matters other than wages and working conditions. “In any modem society, a. trade union is wise to try to play a part in the general life of the nation, and to contribute to the economic growth of the country,” he said. "Unions should make a substantial contribution to the general cultural and social development of a nation." „ , , Mr Jenks, who has lived in Geneva for 40 years, is the first 1.L.0. director-general to visit Australia. He will spend 10 days studying social conditions there.
