Campaign begins
(N Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, Sept 2. The official campaign to elect a President of South Vietnam began at midday today with President Nguyen Van Thieu as the sole candidate.
Despite the withdrawal of his two rivals for the highest position in the country. President Thieu has indicated that he intends to go through with the formalities of the campaign and gain as many votes as he can on October 3 to demonstrate the popular support for his policies. Vice-President Nguyen Cao
Ky was finally struck off the list of candidates when the Supreme Court, in a second about-face in 11 days, decided that his name did not have to remain on the ballot even though he declared his withdrawal after the legal dead-line for doing so. A former Head of State, General Duong van Minh withdrew from the election two weeks ago, saying, as Mr Ky did later, that the October poll would be rigged by the Thieu Administration.
