East-Shirley pavilion
East-Shirley, one of Christchurch’s largest cricket clubs and the winner of the Petersen Shield for the last three years, has taken another step in its development of Burwood Oval. Christchurch City Council permission for the club to extend its pavilion was granted during the winter, and after about a month of work, the job is almost completed. About six years ago, the club built its own small pavilion adjoining the council’s own rooms on the park. The new extensions have more than double the area of this building, and also provide showers and larger tea-
room facilities. “The 1960 s have been a decade of steady growth, development, and consolidation by the club,” said its chairman (Mr N. G. Ockwell). “We are now financially sound, and with a large and growing membership, felt our money should be devoted to the benefit of the members.”
The club’s patron (Mrs L. R. Hartley) will open the extensions on opening day, on October 2. A feature of the extensions is a small balcony above the main building, providing elevated scoring facilities.
