Public interest! grows

Public interest in the* Westland National Park was; greater last year than ever before, according to the park; board’s annual report. Although there was no reliable formula to calculate the exact number of visitors in any one year, 18,027 vehicles entered the park last year, compared with 4178 in 1965-66. In the 1969-70 year there were 14,214 vehicles. A total of 11,852 persons toured over the Franz Josef glacier with guides from the Franz Josef Hotel. This was an increase over the previous year. Access to the glacier was considered to be so good that many persons were able to visit it without guides. During the year 16,052 persons attended 177 evening lectures while 470 persons were taken on 42 nature walks. Sixty-eight walks and day lectures were provided for 2686 educational touring groups and 1531 students attended 37 evening talks. In addition three talks were given to 112 students.
