Park’s native birds
The population of the more common native birds in the Westland National Park appear to be increasing, according to the park’s annual report. In the more remote areas a number of rock wrens have been seen while on Lake Mapourika the crested grebe population appears the same as in previous years although young birds were hatched again this year. There was an excellent flowering season for most alpine flora during the last summer except for rata which had a poor season.
