Cook plaque in Sounds

(N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM, Sept. 1. The Royal New Zealand Air Force took a Historic Places Trust plaque from Woodbourne to Arapawa Island, in the entrance to Queen Charlotte Sound, today. An Iroquois helicopter unloaded the marker at a point 1240 ft above sea level on the island, which is to be named Cook’s Lookout. It is thought this will *be the most elevated Cook monument in the world. The plaque records that from the point, on December 23, 1770, Captain Cook first saw the strait which now bears his name.

The point is a small plateau near the reserve above Umuwheke Bay.
