Official report and prices

The official report on yesterday's Christchurch wool sale, issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers' Association, in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers' Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, says: “The offering of 22,603 bales, which comprised 60 per cent new season’s fleece with the balance made up of crutchings and oddments, was drawn from Canterbury, Marlborough, the West Coast and Nelson. Wool drawn from North Canterbury generally showed the effects of the drought and although sound, was shorter in staple than usual and faulted with dust and colour.

“However, wools from the Canterbury foothills and Marlborough, although also showing some discoloration, opened up in good order and were generally well grown. “The crutchings on display reflected the adverse seasonal conditions and tended to be shorter and dustier than usual. “There was a good selection of crossbred second-shear, mainly from the West Coast, and this was generally of fair to good colour and length. “Competition was fairly general, the Continent being the principal buyer with Japan and j local mills competing on selected lines. “Compared with the recent Dunedin sale, the market can be quoted as follows: * “Medium and strong halfbred fleece was 21 per cent to 5 per cent cheaper, fine halfbreds unchanged. whilst crossbreds and second-shears were in buyers’ favour. “Crossbred skirtings showed no change, but halfbreds were fully 5 per cent cheaper. Crossbred crutchings were slightly cheaper and halfbred crutchings showed little change. “Prompt date for the sale is September 20.” The following is the official range of prices:— Medium Merino, 60/ 645:
