Crayfish pickings lean in Chathams

“The honeymoon for crayfish harvesting in the Chathams is over,” Mr C. Reid, owner of the fishing vessel Prospector I, said at Lyttelton yesterday. Prospector I has been stationed in the Chathams since her launching at Lyttelton in January, 1968. Mr Reid said that about 60 crayfish craft remained in the Chathams, but many would return to the mainland soon. Mr Reid said that he did not think the Chathams would be a lucrative crayfishing ground for another 10 years. He would not go back, but was taking Prospector I to Raglan. Other fishermen had told him they also would not go back to the Chathams, he said. LABOUR SURPLUS There was a surplus of 160 men on the Lyttelton waterfront when work began yesterday. Only 372 men were engaged for day work and 78 for supplementary hours last evening. The position is expected to cnange before the week-end. because more ships are due.
