SEARCH FOR BOYS ENDS

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON STATE, August 31.

The authorities have called off one of the largest searches ever made in Washington, unable to find any trace of two boys who have been missing for six days along the rugged coastline.

Mark Peal, aged 10, and Kevin Conner, aged 13, were last seen when they left a private camping ground, telling their parents that .they were going to explore some abandoned Army bunkers.

About 50 searchers were still at work late yesterday, checking holes which were drilled in the area for Second World War defence installations, but the Clallam County Sheriff described this latest effort as “grasping for straws.”

At the height of the search, over the week-end, nearly 500 soldiers and 200 civilian volunteers participated, helped by Army, Coast Guard and civilian helicopters. Among the volunteers were skin-divers, mountaineer rescue units, police search-and-rescue groups, and dogs and their handlers.
