CANTERBURY BEATEN

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. Panmure continued its unbeaten run in the national men’s invitation basketball tournament last night, beating Palmerston North 84-76. It is the favourite for the title and with Wellington and Nelson the only unbeaten team. Both Panmure and Wellington have played three matches, while Nelson has played two. The architects of Panmure s victories have been two Americans in the team, S. MeKeen and R. South, who is also the coach. These two are far in advance of any New Zealand player in the tournament, especially McKeen, whose ability with the ball amazed spectators.

Wellington maintained its unbeaten record when it narrowly defeated Canterbury. 69-65. Bay of Plentv caused a minor surprise by beating the more fancied Otago side by the same score.

Yesterday’s results were:— Palmerston North 74, Hutt Valley 65; Wellington 85, Napier 71; Bay of Plenty 69, Otago 65; Wellington 69, Canterbury 65; Nelson 65, Hutt Valley 62; Panmure 84. Palmerston North 76; Panmure 97. New Plymouth 54.
