SEIZURES IN CHILE
(N Z Press Assn. —Copyright) SANTIAGO, Sept. 1.
Chile’s largest brewery and its largest tyre and battery factory were taken over by their workers today. The 2000 employees of Insa Industries, which is partly owned by the General Tyre Company of America, said that they had taken control of the factory because of “bad administration” by its directors.
Chile’s Left-wing Government has been negotiating unsuccessfully to nationalise the company by offering to buy out its stockholders. Earlier, workers ha<j seized the Compania Cervecerias Unidas, which employs 2600 people and is part-owned by the Augustin Edwards family, which also controls “Le Mercurio,” the largest newspaper chain in Chile. Mr Edwards, a critic of the Marxist President, Dr Allende, left Chile as soon as Dr Allende was elected.
