REFUGEES INCREASE

(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter— Copyright) NEW DELHI, Aug. 31 The number of East Pakistani refugees in India is now more than 8,250,000, the Indian Minister of Labour and Rehabilitation (Mr Khadiikar) disclosed today. At the present rate, the figure might reach 10 million quite soon, he told a Parliamentary committee. As recently as August 21, the refugee figure was officially stated to be 7,920,000; the latest statistics mean that more than 300,000 have crossed the border in the last week. Mr Khadiikar said that he was very disappointed at the response of the international community- to the needs of the refugees. Of 1100 million rupees (sl33m) promised in aid, only 84 million rupees (about $10m) had been received in cash and material.

Government officials have estimated the annual cost of looking after the refugees at the equivalent of sB9lm.
