(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. Disappointment that gymnastics had been deleted from the 1974 Commonwealth Games programme was expressed at the opening ceremony of the national gymnastic championships, in Lower Hutt last night.
The Governor-General (Sir Arthur Porritt) who opened the championships, and the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr J. Kennedy-Good) said it was “sad” that gymnastics was not included.
Gymnastics was replaced by bowls by the Games organising committee, to reduce cost.
Sir Arthur Porritt said it was good to see so many youngsters joining the increasing number of gymnastic clubs. He thought New Zealand “could do with a lot of young gymnasts.” The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) was also a member of the official party for the formal opening of the three-day championships, which began yesterday morning.
