Games swimming pool
Sir,—Your leading article states that it is too late to reconsider the venue of the swimming. Is it? The City
Engineer’s estimates read $600,000, $1,500,000, $2,000,000. Is the latest figure any more reliable than preceding ones proved to be? Is the issue solely one of cost or is it one of costvalue? Could not this money be more profitably diverted into the development of a sports centre which would, as stated in the leading article, be "a permanent asset to the city.” Are the best interests of the city being served by current makeshift arrangements? Can present decisions not be reviewed in the light of honesty, common sense, and simple economics? Or did Browning’s vision of the Pied Piper really extend to the Christchurch Mayor and Corporation, 1971? I submit that your responsibility to the public obliges you to obtain and publish all relevant facts.—Yours, etc., R. I. TEMPLETON. August 5. 1971.
Sir,—l think that all the facts and figures should be made public. This is public money they are playing with, not someone’s pocket money. Even tenders should be made public with figures after one has been chosen. This, I feel, keeps things a little straight. You would think that this was the arstpool ever built anywhere. Thank goodness we are not planning to go to themoon! I feel more care is needed.!—Yours, etc., R. SAXON. August 4, 1971.
