C.I.B. inquiry on contracts

AUCKLAND, Aug. 5. Two men are being sought by detectives concerning an inquiry into the letting and payments for contracts by the Manukau City Council. “We are convinced these men will be able to help us,” said Detective .Inspector B. T. N. Hutton, head of the southern division C. 1.8., today. Mr Hutton said he could not comment more except to say that the police inquiry was extensive and was being followed up overseas. The Mayor of Manukau (Mr L. Elsmore) confirmed today that the value of the payments being studied could need $lO,OOO. He said the inquiry did not involve city engineers or engineering staff.

Kowhal sails.—The Union Steam Ship Company’s Kowhai, which has ben delayed at Lyttelton since last Monday because of a crew shortage, obtained a full complement yesterday and sailed for Tauranga to load export cargo for Australia.
