Big sale by B.B.C.
The 8.8. C. has sold a drama package worth about $1,120,000 in a new deal with the American Corporation of Public Broadcasting. The programmes will be seen by American audiences served by more than 200 television stations under the overall title of “Masterpiece Theatre,” starting soon in peak viewing time. "Masterpiece Theatre” was launched in January with a grant from Mobil Oil with half a million dollars* worth of 8.8. C. drama programmes and won ratings among the highest achieved by noncommercial television in the U.S., so their new grant is more than double.
The new package for this year consists of “Jude the Obscure,” "The Gambler,” “Resurrection,” and "Cold Comfort Farm.” Titles for the next season will be announced later. This new sale means that 8.8. C. drama sales to the U.S. in the last nine months have topped $2,000,000. This includes the C.B.S. network sale of “The Six Wives of Henry VIII, ’’ which starts this month.
