S.I. table tennis team surprise
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON.
The men’s and women’s teams for the annual inter-island table tennis contests were announced yesterday by the secretary of the New Zealand Table Tennis Association (Mr K. C. Wilkinson).
The biggest surprise is the inclusion of the 15-year-old Canterbury player, M. Burrowes, in the South Island side. Burrows is the youngest player ever chosen to represent the South Island. He has been selected ahead of many well-performed seniors, but his play for Canterbury this year and his recent performance in reaching the semi-finals of the South Island championships gave him strong claims for inclusion, Mr A. B. McCallum, of Christchurch, the South Island sole selector, otherwise has chosen a fairly predictable team.
The North Island sole selector, Mr N. H. Tizard, of Wanganui, had an almost automatic choice for his men’s team with the four national representatives of 1971. His women’s team how-
e ever, might not agree with d all amateur selectors, except •- for the No. 1 choice, Mrs N. d Traill, the undisputed “Queen t of the Table.” I- The teams are:— South Island.—Men: B. A.
