New airport delayed

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 3. The ss.lm airport being built at Rarotonga will not come into full use for another 17 months—a year behind schedule. The runway will be ready by about next July, but the landing aids necessary for 24-hour international flights will not be installed and working until the end of 1973, according to a Civil Aviation spokesman. Air N.Z, had intended to begin services to Rarotonga from next June, and had planned a direct AucklandCook Islands-North America service, and a round-the-Islands route linking New Zealand, Fiji, Western Samoa, the Cook Islands and possibly Tahiti. Discussions are continuing in Wellington between the airline and the Civil Aviation Division.
