BREWERY DISPUTE

Meeting on Friday

A meeting of all the parties to the Auckland brewery dispute has been set down for 3 p.m. on Friday. The president of the Federation of Labour (Mr T. E. Skinner) representatives of the brewery workers, and the heads of the two Auckland breweries will attend the talks.

Mr Skinner said that the F.O.L. had taken over the dispute, but that no change was likely until Friday, as he would be in Wellington today and tomorrow, the Press Association reports. Meanwhile, more than 800 men are out of work. The secretary of the Hotel Workers’ Union (Mr G. Annstrong) said today that at least 300 bar staff were out of work. Some 550 brewery workers have lost their jobs in Auckland.

The executive of the Canterbury Trades Council yesterday gave a warning that if the breweries used “blackleg labour to break this dispute” the council would declare black all the products of all the breweries. The president (Mr R. A. Hill) said the affiliated unions would be asked to ban the handling of these products, and also to boycott their consumption.
