EVENING OF G. & S.

Excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan operas are to be performed in the Repertory Theatre tomorrow and Thursday by members of the Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society in a ‘‘mini-concert” to raise funds for the society.

The first half of the concert will feature choruses and solos from “The Sorcerer,” “H.M.S. Pinafore,” “The Pirates of Penzance," “Patience,” “lolanthe,” “The Mikado," “The Yeoman of the Guard,” and the “Gondoliers”; and the second half will be devoted to “Trial by Jury.” Gwen Millar is the producer, and Tony Peek the musical director.

The object of the concert is to raise funds to pay off the society’s debts on its productions of last year—which now amount to nearly slooo—and to enable it to plan for major productions next year.

The concert has not been advertised, tickets having been sold by members, but box plans have now opened at Beggs.

Proposals are already in the pipeline for two shows next year the operetta “White Horse Inn” in the Civic Theatre in July, and “Princess Ida,” one of the lesser-known Savoy operas. The latter show will be in the Town Hall, on dates yet to be set.

The society is also making plans for a festival of Gilbert and Sullivan at the Hermitage in September. The major part of this will be the competition on Saturday, September 11, between societies for the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival Cup.
