U.S. TROOPS AND DRUGS
Reassurance for Nixon (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright.) SAN CLEMENTE, July 18. Dr Jerome Jaffe, the White House adviser on drug-abuse control, told President Nixon today that the use of heroin among American troops returning from Vietnam was not at widespread as had been feared.
Dr Jaffe, who recently visited Vietnam, estimated that 1000 of 22.000 men—about 4J per cent—given urine tests in the last few weeks had been found to be heroin-users to some degree. This, he said, indicated that the problem was not as serious as appeared when reports circulated that up to 10 per cent of the returning troops were addicted.
