Poliomyelitis prevention
The record of no cases of poliomyelitis since April, 1962, came to an end in 1970 with the notification of two cases, one from Auckland, the other from Tauranga, says the annual report of the Department of Health, tabled in Parliament recently. There were three other suspected cases, but these did not prove to be proitive The need for protection by a simple vaccine had again been emphasised during the year, says the report. In some areas in the North Island, attendance at doctors’ rooms for vaccinations against diphtheria, whooping cough .tetanus, and poliomyelitis had been too low.
Departmental officers had held immunisation clinics in these areas to maintain immunity levels.
