“Miss International" in Christchurch

“Miss International,” Miss Jane Hansen, of Wellington, is in Christchurch this week for four days of promotional work.

She arrived from Wellington yesterday and will begin work at Ballantynes today.

A lot of the clothes Miss Hansen will be wearing in her work at the store are ski-wear.

“I have been a skier for 15 years,” she said. She hopes to be able, to snatch time to exercise her prowess at the sport during her stay in the South Island. Since her return from Japan where she won the

“Miss International” title, Miss Hansen has been “flat out” with personal appearance work and social engagements.

She will be heading for Auckland for more such work after leaving Christchurch, but has absolutely no idea of what is happening after these engagements are over. “That’s the exciting thing about being ’Miss International.* You never know what is going to happen next.”

The title-holder has no set duties after the contest, but must return to Japan next year to crown her successor. She is the first New Zealander to win the crown. Miss Hansen enjoyed the contest, which was judged on personality as well as the usual beauty contest requirements, but had no idea that she would be the winner. "In fact,” she said, “after two days in Japan I rang my parents and told them I thought ‘Miss Thailand’ would be the winner. She was first runner-up.” Miss Hansen’s prizes make most women green with envy. She receives the "Miss International” crown, $5OOO worth of pearls and gold, and

a cheque for 2m yen—“sssoo and 55c, exactly, in American dollars.”

A lot of her promotional work Miss Hansen organises herself, although she does have a New Zealand manager. She will leave Christchurch on Saturday.
