REFUSAL OF PAY
Maori council critical The State Services Commission’s refusal to authorise full pay for Mr A. F. Orme while taking up a Churchill fellowship, and the endorsement of its refusal by the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake), were deplored at a meeting of the Te Waipounamu District Maori Council recently. In resolving to express its disapproval, the council emphasised that this year was set aside for United Nations Race Relations Year.
“The arguments against Mr Orme’s application for full pay while under the Churchill fellowship are seen to be a technical regulation which cuts straight across the spirit of fellowship and also the Race Relations Year,” the council said.
