Obituary MRS J. C. BALCH
j A Christchurch woman who celebrated her hundredth birthday on July 12. died yesterday. She was Mrs Janet Campbell Balch, a patient of the Presbyterian Social Service Association’s Woodchester Hospital. Mrs Balch was born at Nelson, moving with her parents, Mr and Mrs James Simson, to Blenheim at an early age. It was at Blenheim that her Close and continuing association with the Presbyterian Church began. Her love of music was fostered when as a young girl she began singing in the St Andrew’s Church choir. In 1899 she was married to Mr William Balch, at that time the Cheviot schoolmaster. They later moved to Belfast and finally to Christchurch when Mr Balch was appointed headmaster of the then new Shirley School. Mrs Balch took a keen interest in gardening, which she was able to maintain into her early nineties. She was a foundation member of the Christchurch North Garden Club—the first in the city.
