Burnside H.S. seeks progress reports

Monthly reports on the progress of Burnside High School’s s2m development plan will be sought by the school’s board of governors.

A feature of the board’s monthly meetings over the last 18 months has been anxiety that the development plan will not be completed by the time the school reaches a roll of more than 1800 in 1974. Last evening’s meeting agreed that the Ministry of Works should furnish progress reports.

The Ministry of Works, however, was not agreeable to contractors on the site being approached for reports, but did agree that periodic reports would be made to the board.

The acting-chairman of the board (Mr E. C. Robinson) said that the board was entitled to monthly reports. “We don’t mind where they come from—from the Ministry of Works, the Department of Education or whatever—but we must have these reports,” he said. The progress of the school’s new art and craft block was also the subject of discussion. Although the Government has approved a contract for the new block, building cannot begin until a break down of the contractors’ costs has been examined by the Department of Education.

“Surely this step should have been taken before the contract was let. This seems an unusual way of doing things,” Mr Robinson

The board will hold discussions with the regional superintendent of education (Mr H. M. McMillan) later this month on the school’s development plan. These discussions will include the development of more covered ways between school buildings, improved heating and the provision of special staffing allowances for large schools. A proposal for an extension of the existing staff room Will also be discussed.
