Disease not identified
(N.Z. Preus Association) WELLINGTON, July 16. The disease which broke out among trout in the hatchery at Temuka at the beginning of the year had not yet been positively identified, the Minister of Marine and Fisheries (Mr McCready) said today.
Answering a question from Mr I. J. Brooks (Lab., Marlborough) the Minister said that as the disease could not be identified quickly, all the fish Were destroyed to stop its possible spread. A laboratory examination indicated the disease was of either bacterial, or viral origin, but it could not be positively identified as this required the culture of living material. Some fish will be reared at the hatchery this year and if the disease reappears, living material will be examined by fish pathologists. The' disease was definitely riot whirling disease, he added.
