Brewery staff to stay off job

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, July 16. More than 400 Auckland brewery workers today voted to remain off the job.

Next week the men will move to publicise their case, with pamphlets and speeches to other unions. On Thursday a few men at both the Dominion and New Zealand Breweries maintained their rolling strike and their workmates either walked off the job or were told by the breweries’ management that there was no work for them. Several hotels are without

beer, and supplies at many others are dwindling. Although Auckland hotel proprietors have outlined a plan for the laying-off of bar staff, it is believed that noone has been put off yet.

Full support for the Auckland brewery workers sent home on Thursday was given at a meeting of the Canterbury Trades Council on Thursday evening. Christchurch brewery workers are continuing their ban on overtime —now in its fifth week—but are taking no other action. As normal production rates are being maintained within the 40 hours, the management does not contemplate taking any action against the union. The output of bottled beer has been heavily reduced by the restriction of overtime, and some shortages are already being felt in Christchurch hotels.
